Ensuring the Best Interests of Children and Families

Laurie Palagyi, Guardian ad Litem in Maine

With a career spanning over 20 years, I have dedicated my life to advocating for children and supporting families through some of life’s most challenging situations. In addition to being a Guardian ad Litem, I hold a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and am licensed to practice in Maine. My background includes extensive experience working directly with children, adolescents, and families in various settings, from private practice to community-based services. Over the years, I have developed a deep understanding of family dynamics, children’s developmental needs, and the importance of stable, supportive environments for young people.

As a Guardian ad Litem, I am committed to compassion, integrity, and thoroughness in every case. You can trust that I will approach your family’s situation with empathy and professionalism, taking the time to listen and understand each perspective. My goal is always to advocate for the child’s best interests, ensuring they have the stability, care, and support they deserve. I am honored to play a role in helping families and courts reach decisions that prioritize the well-being of the children involved.

What is a Guardian ad Litem

As a Guardian ad Litem (GAL), I am appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of your child/ren during family matters proceedings. My role involves thoroughly evaluating each child’s unique circumstances and providing recommendations to the court that support the child/ren's well-being and needs. These recommendations may cover areas like decision-making, parenting time, parent-child contact conditions, and other key issues relevant to your case.

To carry out a complete assessment, I engage in an investigative process that includes meeting with the child/ren, interviewing parents and live-in partners, and, when appropriate, speaking with others involved in the child’s life, such as teachers, doctors, caregivers, or school counselors. Additionally, I observe the child/ren within each parent’s home environment and review pertinent court records. In some situations, I may also examine child services reports or medical and educational records to gain a well-rounded understanding.

The depth of my investigation and the recommendations I make are guided by the Appointment Order, which is tailored to the specific needs of each family. For some families, my involvement may only require interviews and home visits with close family members, while others benefit from a more comprehensive investigation. In these cases, I strive to understand the family’s history, support network, and each individual’s perspective.

Ultimately, my focus is always on prioritizing your child/ren’s best interests, whether the case is resolved through settlement discussions or by a judge in a contested hearing.
